About Euroclash

Euroclash is a homebrew competition where European beer styles go head to head. It started in 2024 to put Greater Wellington brewers up against each other on classic European styles, and to grow the local homebrewing scene. Old-world styles, new-world brewers.

Every year picks a handful of European brewing nations and two BJCP styles per country. The line-up changes each edition. Each year's page has that year's nations, styles, dates and results.

How to enter

Entries open ahead of each competition. To take part:

  1. Register for the current year once entries open.
  2. Brew to style. Pick one of the year's listed European styles and brew it to the BJCP guidelines.
  3. Drop off your bottles at an entry point before the closing date.

From 2027, entries run through OpenBrew. The entry link appears on the current year's page when entries open.

Rules & entry requirements

  • One entry per style, up to the per-year bottle limit (13 bottles total in 2026).
  • Two bottles per entry, 500 ml minimum each. PET is recommended; glass is fine if it meets the volume.
  • No flip-top bottles. Cap or cork them. Brown glass is preferred; green or clear is accepted.
  • Each bottle carries the entry label from the registration software. The cap or closure must be free of identifying marks: black out any printed caps, and no embossing.
  • Entries must match a listed BJCP 2021 European style for the year. The same beer can't be entered twice.

Eligibility

  • Open to New Zealand residents aged 18 or over.
  • Beer must be homebrewed on private home equipment with commonly available ingredients. No commercial production.
  • Commercial brewers can enter as long as the beer is made entirely at home.
  • Judges may enter and win but can't judge their own beer. Organisers may enter but aren't eligible for award or spot prizes.

For judges

Judging follows the BJCP 2021 guidelines. Every flight has at least one BJCP judge, and every entrant gets a minimum of two score sheets once judging is done.

Best of Show is its own round. The top beer from each flight goes through to a final and gets re-tasted head to head to decide the placings. Because of that, the Grand Champion isn't always the highest flight score on the day.

We always want more judges and stewards. Certified or keen to learn, get in touch on the contact page. New to judging? Roughly: study the BJCP material, pass the online entrance exam, then sit the tasting exam.

For brewers & clubs

Euroclash is run by and for the Greater Wellington homebrew community. A few of the local clubs:

  • Valley Brewers: Hutt Valley homebrewers, monthly, sharing beers and know-how.
  • PoriBrewer: homebrewers across the wider Porirua area.
  • Brütopians: Wellington brewers meeting monthly to taste and give feedback.
